So sorry Judy...RIP Dexter.
While he appeared stable and content last night, this morning it was clear Dexter was in unrepairable trouble in his MB bath, unable to stay vertical and breathing very very rapidly. I removed him back into the DT for half an hour, where he managed to upright himself but began breathing very, very slowly and finally drifted to an angle. The other fish were being fed, meanwhile, and moved to the area of the tank where Dexter was, but did not bother him. So at least he spent his last little while in the company of his mates. I then sedated him (thank you all for the clove oil advice) in a small bucket of tank water, and placed him in the freezer, where he has frozen upright without moving since I put him there.
Dex will be buried tomorrow near the roots of a Manitoba maple tree which he will fertilize well, and will be covered with a piece of Manitoba limestone, so the dog doesn't get him. When the tree leafs out in the spring, Dex will be remembered as a feisty, courageous fish. We had a challenging journey together, and he was cared for not just by me, but by so many of our on this forum. Thank you all for your support and help over the many months of Dex's trials.
'Bye, little guy.
