i like the idea of feeding my fish more high quality food but frozen blood worms and brine shrimp from the lfs gets to be a lot of $ so what are some good foods to feed smal ciclids (rams), 2 1/2" discus and any other fish i have.

Grow-your-own is by far the cheapest way to go. With a small initial investment, some research, and some effort, you can have an on going food source. There is a bunch of options, all with their own advantages and limitations.
It's worth looking into. There are several websites with info and some that sell starter kits with directions.

I've never purchased from them though.

Howdey Qbal; I see your another home grown discus fanantic ! Great... Living on the west coast, try making your own food. China town is great for fresh shrimp, squid, etc. Grind up some beef heart, add shrimp, garlic, veggies, etc.
Your fish will enjoy the diet. and it only cost a few dollars for a large batch.
