Default trying to fool mother nature

    Hi Everyone

I seem to keep having the same problem over and over again.... sooooo.... I decided to try something new

I have 2 pairs spawning at the same time or atleast a day apart.... the hatch rates haven't been all that great. Both pair manage to get their fry to attatch and do well for a few days and then decide to spawn again

I'm guessing it wouldn't be so bad if they'd get a descent size spawn. I "think" they would raise them without new temptations to spawn.... I dunno :-\

Anyway.... to make a long story short this is what I did.

Pair 1 had free swimming fry attatched and decided to spawn again One or both of them decided they'd start eating their fry (Not sure which one) I pulled 10 fry from that pair that was left..... I gave those fry to pair 2

Well.... what do you know happened now Pair 2 decided to spawn again :banghead: This was about 18 hours apart.

Soooooo.... I took the cone from Pair 2 and moved into Pair 1's tank :funny: Man are they confused :funny:

Ya gotta Love these crazy fish ;D

    A few shots....

    Pair 2

    Pair 1

What a ya think..... will it work

Beth - Only you could have this problem : !

I think its worth a shot ! But what are you going to do when pair one wants to breed again and they have all those fry from both sets of eggs ? I got it - you could then move the fry to pair two and take their older fry away from them ! LOL.

Oh how I wish I had your problem !

BTW how is the pool project coming ? 8) Keep us posted.

If they start looking like they are going to breed again--just pull the female(s)--they always are the ones causing trouble : ;D

What beautiful fish by the way! I love the reddish color on the 2nd pair. Can I get in line for some fry?

Great Job Beth--I only wish I could grow fish the way you do!

Beth What about separating the pair with one of those deviders and giving each fish its own set of eggs to tend to. That way the fry can pass from one parent to the other if they want

    Beth,

If you keep this up you are going to have to put your fish in therapy.

those fish look big Beth, what size pvc is that in there?

What I've done with problem pairs like that is spawn them in low ph/conductivity water, then raise the parameters to something less ideal, seems to take them off their cycle a bit.

I would just yank the female and the pot once they start free swimming. My female does the same thing everytime even with 150 fry on their backs she will try to spawn again.

I feel for you Beth..and I love it - it's like we have a mess of bunny nests around every year - if I'm not looking the Crows get them....mom comes back to one bunny if she's lucky.....comes back that night to feed and finds she's got 3-5 more again (cause I can't find every nest and which belongs to who all the time anyway...) most of the time it works out though!! who woulda thought!
