API: Tap Water Filter...

API make a water de-ionising unit called "Tap Water Filter".

I know this is only a small unit, but i'm wondering if anyone has any expirience with it and could tell me if it is worth getting?

R/O is totally out of the question for me right now, and quite unecessary.

I have only the one discus tank, that I probably change about 10 or so gal p/day on.

It is a 240l tank.


Is this unit worth looking into? Anyone know any specifications?

also, I wonder how much $$$$$ API pay Jack Whattley to put his name on it??

I have used it before. The cartridges don't last very long.

I used it for a 29 gallon tank with a single breeding pair to lower hardness for a few weeks to get a spawn. It worked. As soon as the eggs hatched I discontinued the filter.

If your plan was to use it on a daily basis it would be cheaper to buy an RO from RandalB.

If you prefer to go the D.I. route, there are better less expensive systems out there than the a.p.i. one.

Look for a set-up that has 3 filters, a carbon block, cation resin container, and anion resin container.

These systems can be very economical to buy and run, if your comfortable with handleing chemicals, the di resins can be regenerated many, many times.

Randal may be able to put something together for you, just ask him, I'm sure he'd love to help you out.

My big problem is that I can't really install an R/O unit in the house. I live with Mum and Dad, and so this is not an option.


My tap water comes out almost mineral-less, which I was thinking, with one of these units, (or something similar) I could run my tap water through there to just get rid of the Chlorine, Pesticides etc.. ANd then be putting better water in my tank thus avoiding the whole R/O thing... Which I would use if only I could.

Carol, what GPD does the API thing do? And how (not so) long do those cartridges last?

I have moderately hard water and get maybe 40-50 gallons per cartridge. Perhaps you just need a good carbon block? Are you sure you have pesticides in your water? Is it drinkable?

If your water is low in TDS. A cheap, inline carbon filter would probably take care of the Chlorine and most organic contaminants. If your water is safe for you to drink, it should be fine for the discus. If you wanted to get elaborate, a 5 or 10 micron carbon block filter inline on the hose you are filling your tanks with would do the trick.

I personally would stay away from the AP tap water filter, way too expensive for what it does.

By the way, my RO in not installed I use it when I want a spawn. When not in use I put the membrane in the fridge and dry everything else out after a thorough rinsing.
