Oh, PH reduces due to the nitrification process. It naturally lowers PH. Other factors include Algae growth etc. Since our waters are so soft it is very easy to reduce PH becuase there is hardly any buffering capacity.

After 2-3 days without water change and heavy feedings it *can* crash to PH6 etc but it hardly happens.

mmm very interesting, i'd say we got that "melted ice" stuff here too. Infact on the news the other day they mentioned a huge "lake" was found underneath part of the sea (surprisingly) and some land at the top of the south island - amazing!

I thought nitrites were pretty much not found in a cycled tank? Ammonia is absorbed almost instantaneously from a healthy well-balanced system so that wouldn't give the nitrite a chance to form would it??

No no not from nitrates being present but from the whole process of turning Ammonia into a safe product. This makes the water acidic...

Sorry, I have been VERY busy with school. Been given a crap load of assignments > and I haven't even visited a pet shop in the last 2 weeks. I will find out tomorrow though :-[
