Default Want to Buy Large Food Safe Drums for Water Storage.

    Folks,
Looking to purchase Large 'Food Safe' Drums for Water Storage. Looking for 1 or 2 > 50 gallons in the Upstate New York area. Want to age my water to drive out the Clorine for water changes. Apprehensive about adding straight tap water @ 20 gallon shots a day to each of my tanks (25% daily water change). Perhaps, my concerns unwarranted...who knows...I'd still feel safer aging the water.

(Have a ton of polypropylene drums at my plant, but they all carried dangerous chemicals at some point. Just afraid of something harmful leaching.)

In austin, there's a store called Barrell City, they sell those drums for around 20 dollars. Also, I've heard that coca-cola bottling plants are a good place to get them cheap.

I get mine from the Coke or Pepsi bottling plants here for 5 or 6 bucks. They're usually already clean except for maybe a little syrup residue. I just rinse them out good and start using!

    Hi

I think you should age the water, this bring the ph to a stable point that matches the tanks.

The reduction of cl2 is an added benifit.

what kind of hazardous material was in the drums at your work? some of the chemicals may still be easily removed.
i work as a hazmat tech and have gotten some plastic drums from my employer to do the same thing. these drums also once contained liquids labelled as hazardous.

I second the Coca Cola Plant. The one around here sells them for $10.00 each.

you're right. i'd definately stay away from the phenols too. potassium permaganate would have been a perfect with little work to clean out the drum.
my drums used to contain the liquid used in paint balls. so far no ill effects on the fish after a very good cleaning.

any other food processing companies around you to ask?

Default NEVERMIND>>>Found THEM. Want to Buy Large Food Safe Drums for Water Storage.

    Folks,
Forgot to give you an update. I found a Pepsi Bottling Plant right near the Albany, NY airport, about 20 minutes from my home. I picked up 3 55gal White Poly Drums that used to contain syrup. Drums were $5 a piece. I have a thread going in the Photo Forum where I'll describe how I plumbed one of the Drums up for water changes.

You're lucky it wan't Dr. Pepper. My house has smelled of the stuff for 2 months now... And they're still unused and in the garage......

Curious... How did (or did) you remove the top? Was it not fused to the barrel?

I had to cut mine off with a saw...

My pump is a submersible one so I need a larger hole.

    I'll just cut them off
