    Default sand

    I have set up my tank now ready for discus but i was just wondering if a sand base would b not too bad for discus, I know it doesnt effect the ph. Any comments? Thanks

    you can go for sand but id be carefull sand tends to provide a good medium for anerobic bacteria and as such you could get pockets of Hydrogen sulphide wich if it leeches into the water column aint good for the fish ..... bubbles coming from the substrate also the smell of rotten eggs is an indicator

    this also happens in Gravel based aquariums but not so much as the vacuming tends to disturb the pockets of deoxgenated media .... (you can have sand it is your choice just be carefull to make sure that Clean the substrate properly dont just skim the surface)

    I have sand in my African tank. I have tried different things in my discus tanks over time. My discus tanks are all bare bottom now. Bare bottom is the best, most efficient way to grow out healthy discus.
