White Worms...

White worms....

I can get them, and i have read that they are much better for your fish than black/blood worms. But whats the trick to keeping them clean and alive for periods of time....

The black worms are kept in an icecream container getting rinced once or twice daily, but the white worms i got last time were in a plastic tub in soil or something and ALWAYS smelt.

I ended up feeding what i could to the fish and throwing a lot of it away.......

I think white worms are a superior conditioning food for spawning pairs as well as a great growth food for juvies. They are a pain in the butt, however, for me to keep, so I rarely do.

I have read that it's better to keep the white worms at 18 degree Celcius.
It might be a problem during summer.

In the back section of the shop it drops to about 18-19 degrees C, as someone mentioned as aposed to the 23 or so degrees out in the shop front with all the aquariums.

What should i do? We tried keeping tyhen before and they always kept smelling up and we ended up throwing them away. Black worms are so much eaier to keep, but i fear to use them for i have read many-a-story about discus getting diseases from the "crap" these worms can carry with them.

try grindal worms. they tolerate higher temps.
exactly the same as white worms except smaller.

problem is, I can't seem to find a supplier.
if you can find a supplier let me know. i'm after them as well.

I culture and feed white worms. The fish love them. I understand that they are fatty and not to feed too often so I give the Discus a feeding of them once or twice a week.

The worms must be kept in cool but not fridge cold temps. I and many other people use a wine cooler. I got my starter cultures on AB. It pays to buy a large expensive "cycled" culture rather than the cheap cultures which contain only a few adult worms and eggs that take months to get going. I check on my cultures every day and feed a mix of oatmeal, yogurt and nutritional yeast.
