I've got a pair that were spawning. They spawned about 6 times. The first 4 times they kept eating the wrigglers. The 5 and 6th time about 10 of the fry were free swimming and attaching to the female. Once I did a 20% water change the following day the fry was gone. This was in a 60 gallon tank with gravel on the bottom. After that incident I moved them into a 29 gallon bare bottom tank with a sponge filter. My ph is about 6.8. No nitrites or nitrates. My hardness was somewhat high it was about 155 ppm. Now im mixxing in ro water which is helping me lower that. Seems like their very shy in this new bare bottom tank. Any suggestions to get them to spawn.

What's the typical breeding tank set up(size, filtration, lighting etc.)?
Ans: I use 18inchX18inchX18inch tanks for breeding.
filtration: spong filter till they lay, once the wrigglers are there I take out the sponge filter and just use a small diffuser.
Lighting: Room light is good enough.

How do you choose your pairs?
Ans: Sometimes I pair them up naturally and at times I pair them up artificially by selecting the healthiest male and female around.

Do you wait for them to pair up in a group or force two known breeders together?
Ans: I normally pair them up in group if they are going to breed for the first time. If they are known breeders then I do force pairing.

    What are the water parameters?
Ans: TDS: around 80. PH 7 and temperature: Normal. I don't use thermostat. Last winter a pair had babies on their body in a temperature of 18C. They were raised and sold later on.

    How do you induce spawning?
    Ans: No inducement

How many of you are using RO/Tap mix, Peat water, or straight tap?
Ans: I use RO water as the normal tap water of our area has too much iron and the normal TDS is around 600

How do you condition your pairs for breeding (feeding regiment, temps etc)
    Ans: No I don't

Do you clean(medicate) your pairs prior to spawning?
    Ans: No

Do you use cones or PVC?
    Ans: PVC

Do you use mash to cover the eggs?
    Ans: No

What do you do after they spawn? How do you treat the eggs to prevent fungus?
Ans: After the spawning is over, I just pour 7.5 ml Rid All antifungus solution to prevent the eggs from getting fungi affected.

What temperature, water parameters do you maintain after the spawn?
    Ans: Normal Temperature

    WC schedule after the spawn?
    Ans: 90% twice a day

Feeding the pair after the spawn ? what type of food and how often?
Ans: Beef Heart Mix thrice a day

letting them pair off seems to be the best way ..nature takes its course ..feeding live worms and doing big water changes with ro has always worked for me .it must fool them into thinking its the rain season ..never gets boring watching them dip and dive and wiggle cleanning the cone ...

90% wc's twice a day may sound extreme, but if you ever tried it and saw the difference it makes in their growth and vitality you'd understand why we do it.
That's not to say you can't raise nice healthy fish with one wc a day, only that it does, IMO, make a worthwhile difference.

i use a 29 gallon tank for breeding although i find if i leave my fish together they spawn better sometimes i remove the other non spawning fish to another tank. i have 5 fish in a 55 and they usually spawn after a waterchange. if you do waterchanges everyday hold off for a few days and then do 1. this change in water condition really seems to set them off. if you keep the pair in the large tank the fry can grow out longer in there. to the point where they can be removed to another tank and you can put the other fish back in

Hello...I 'm not an experienced breeder, actually I have had Discus for a couple of years now and I'm freaking out. I just have them for their beauty and now I see that I suddenly seem to have a couple and their cleaning a corner of the aquarium and the one that seems to be the female has a tube protruding ...is she about to lay eggs. I have a 25 gallon aquarium with 4 Discus that I have had for about a year now. I just recently bought a 55 gallon acrylic aquarium but is till empty untill I buy all the equipment and cycle it. Not sure what to do. Is it Ok is I leave them all in the 25 gallon aquarium. I don't think I have enough time to set up the 55 gallon aquarium. If they have babies what would they eat. Gosh! I have some many questions and not sure what to do.I have some experience breeding Angel fish but not Discus. Any advice would be helpful.

Try putting your question in a separate thread in the breeding section.

As stated above this thread is real old.....but one of the main reasons I see for low fertility in the males is this insane notion that so many have about the temp. I don't know where you have yours set but setting it at 82 will probably help.
