I used spinach in the beefheart, my discus love it, and my friend told me that spinach is important for discus (even they are meat eaters).
That way you cant use spinach.
    I used also:
    red sweet pepper
    garlic
    and paprika ;D

Carol, regarding the Salad Shooter-- I have a food processor that has a grating disk with large holes that fits in the top. I suspect the food processor motor is pretty strong and can grate frozen meat.

Have you ever used a food processor with the grating attachment? It could perhaps let some of the chunks slip and spin around on top of the disk, maybe larger chunks would be an idea to try if that happens.

Anona, starting to get my ducks in a row for babies later this month

Update -- worked great (um, grate?) on the BH mix I made, chipping the frozen mix into smaller bits that the small discus could eat easily. Some chunks did slide along the top, enought to break the attachment the second time I used it. It was almost 25 years old and was plastic at critical points, so now I'm back to shaving the frozen mix with a serated knife which often leaves chunks that the fish cannot suck down.

    Carol, your recipe/idea rocks!!!

    Discus go crazy for it.

I have grated some pork heart manually - hard work. My salad shooter will arrive within a week. ;D

this sounds like a great idea unfortunately my Discus are snobs and turn their nose up at any kind of flake food, so how would I suplement the vitimins. Would soaking the BH bits in water with a couple drops of liquid vitimins work?

Drew, did you try tetra's color bits? This might work for you.

Feed tetra bits first thing in the morning. You need to train your spoiled babies to eat a pellet in addition to all their meaty foods.

Finally got my salad shooter. I got the prof.model, used one.

Carol, here is the question. I used the shooter and it doesn't come out like yours does. Is there a trick to it? I had the cubes frozen and when I fed them through the shooter, it grades most. But, from each cube, I had a fairly thick leftover slice that would stick to the rotating grader on the outside, and inside, the shavings were sticking to the grader as well. What am I doing wrong? I don't know if this could be the problem, but I had my cubes on the trays frozen for about 2 weeks. It looked like they got freezer burns and it made them rubbery. In any case as I started adding cubes, I had lots of waste that would stick to the grader and spin around. Just wouldn't grade as it was rubbery, I think, and was getting thawed out.

    Any pointers would be appreciated.

I remember when I used my hand grader, about two weeks ago, shavings were coming out fine. I think I had some waste too, but the final product was fine.

I make small batches at a time, keeping the cubes in the freezer. I also have a few pieces at the end that do not grate. I grind quickly into the bowl and empty the shavings into a baggie all before they can thaw. Speed is of the essence ;D

    Carol-
Great Idea!!! I looked everywere for a salad shooter, but eventually I had to go shopping online. I bought the professional model with instructions and three blades for $15.50 on ebay. Coldn't have found a better deal. I am going to run the BH through the grinder twice to get it into smaller sized bits.
    Thanks for the great idea,
    Fred

    You're welcome ;D
Do small batches so the chunks don't unfreeze too much.

Well I finally got them to start eating pellets. I had to starve them for 3 days tho. They still won't east the color bits tho. Seems like they will only eat the pellets that will sink to the bottom that they can suck up off the bottom. Now I just need a salad shooter..
