Re:Carol's beefheart - will not disolve in tank!
???I saw something which I think is similar to Salad Shooter. The output size is about 1/8" in diameter (round).
Is that good enough or too big.
When making beefheart you donot mixed it with something?
Please reply. Thanks

I don't mix anything - just shredded beefheart. Try yours out and see if the pieces are small enough. My discus like to swallow the pieces whole.

Just a note about people trying to locate beefheart. Not all grocery stores carry it, but most can order it. I got the last package at my Safeway store, after trying serveral other chains in the area. Several meat managers said that this cut is popular among Hispanics, and that the few packages they put out daily go pretty quickly. So, you might try stores that cater to the Hispanic population.
One butcher suggested putting the fresh package in the freezer 45 mins to an hour to harden it up a little so that it easier to trim the pieces. I did that last night, cut into smaller chunks and then put back into the freezer.
I'm sort of looking forward to shredding mine tonight with my salad shooter, and testing it out with my Discus.

Hi Carol,
I have one question for you - do you use garlic in your food, if yes can you provide information ( how much per lb. ) and how many times per month e.t.c..

Straight beefheart - no garlic. I also feed tetrabits and usually black worms.

Thank you Carol
Do you add garlic in any form to your discus food?.
Since I started using garlic no sign of "hex".

No Garlic. I hardly ever have sick fish. The only times I have trouble with hex is new fish (shipping stress) or from being picked on in a pair up tank (odd man out).

Re:Carol's beefheart - will not disolve in tank!
Yes, thanks Carol. While I have not tried grating the plain beefheart, I did find that grating the frozen mix (of BH with shrimp and vitamins) to keep in the freezer works well. I never did win a Salad shooter on Ebay, so I've just used my 4 sided cheese grater to do a cup at a time to keep in a jar in the freezer.
I like being able to dish it out by the spoonful instead of carving up a serving twice a day. I'm sure that when the babies are big enough and have finished off the mix, I'll do a batch that is just plain beefheart.

G'day,
yes Kees or GSim is still alive and kicking but has given up breeding Discus. I bought all his stock recently and been in contact almost daily.

Re: Carol's beefheart - will not disolve in tank!
its a great idea and its mine. I wrote about it 12-02-2003, 01:20 PM. I am glad someone of carols stature has validated my idea. Be careful on how frozen the beeheart cubes are. The Salad shoote is not designed to grind through totally frozen cubes. Semi frozen works best .
here is the original article under Quick Beefheart Question
here's what you do with beefheart. First go out and buy a Salad Shooter. thats the plastic kitchen appliance that you can shred or cut up vegtables for a salad. hence the name.
next trim beef heart and cut into cubes about 1"x!" or around that size. freeze cubes until they are solid. but them in the salad shooter tube and use the shredding attachment to grind the bh. attach a zip lock bag to the place where the bh comes out. when it is ground it comes out as 1/2 inch thin ribbons which look like worms.
my fish love them easy for them to eat and since it is not liquidfied it does'nt break up and foul the water. they can pick up the ribbons off of the bottom to there hearts content. i have gravel and no problems with fouling. suppliment with tettar bits or whatever. nice and easy and clean

Re: Carol's beefheart - will not disolve in tank!
I had a salad shooter I bought the beef heart @ wal-mart trimed & cut froze it the put it thru the shooter My Discus Love it. Let me ask this could you inject the beefheart with vitamins or garlic juice or even medications then freeze N grind it. I inject seasonings in my Turkeys before I deep fry it for added flavor. Is this feasable.
I may try it and report on it later
Thanks RAy
