Default NO NET NEW DISCUS RELEASE

I had the pleasure of spending some time, and buying super discus from THRIVING DISCUS in Beaverton, Oregon. Their discus come from Malaysia and Thailand. It is a small shop, but with immaculate tanks. Owner Art is a master at handling your choices. I watched him catch Red Dragons using only a plastic bag. (no net)

He emphasized that no nets should be used in releasing fish in our home aquariums. They deserve to be treated with great care to avoid injury and stress. Release them right from the bag minus all of his water.

I found the above advice easier said then done. With the long delivery bag, empting all the water left the fish at the bottom and more difficult to release.

I thought I'd share with you through photos what I devised. It makes for an easy release.

#1 Remove excess water into bucket placed on top of
aquarium. Leave some water for the fish.

#2 Cut just above the remaining water line.
    #3

#4 Remove remaining water into bucket.

#5 Release fish into aquarium. (bucket represents
aqaurium) I can't tell you where I got the Red Ring
    Discus.

Aloha I use the palm and dump technique. I almost never use any net. My discus and angels are so accustomed to my hand being in their tanks that anyone who comes to purchase disus or my angels are amazed. To me they just never tried it. ;D Of course I check all parameters prior to placing in my tanks. Your way is just as good. Thanks for sharing.

Glad you fellas shared too. I asked Art what about using your hand/palm to release discus. He said it was a no, no due to possible contaminates. Yet, catch and release trout fishing you nearly always have to handle the fish. No doubt, the discus are more fragile.
