I think the 1/2" foam is pretty much standard. The stuff you pick up in the insulation isle that is used for siding houses.
I put nothing on the bottom of the tank, just set it on the foam. On the sides I only use reflectix.......
Hi
Regarding the foam that you all use for the bottom of the tank. Is it the foam from homedepot that is blue on one side and white on the other?
Also, Do you need to put foam first then Reflectix or just put the Reflectix on???
Thanks
Kenny

Tank is cycling!! Be ready for Discus in 4-6 weeks
Are the front sides sealed? I can't see the tape if it is, but the front must be sealed to prevent heat loss through the seams.
Unfortuntely you will see the tape, but some are less visible than others. No way to avoid it

Ohhh, Now it make sense!! :-[ I tape the sides now to seal it. Thanks for catching that, otherwise the reflectix will not serve it's purpose.
Also, Do you wrap your water storage container? I have a plastic 60 gal drum and was wondering if that will help if I wrap that too.

just dont tape it too tight, or else water will condense and start dripping. when this happened, i thought my tank was leaking
For me I know my electric bill has been less using the insulation.

For those that use the insulation, what temp is your fishroom at? On some of my tanks I am using insulation and on some Im not. The reason Im not on some is that my fishroom temp is just a couple of degrees lower (26C)than the the water itself (30C). Wondering if it is still worth while to use insulation.
In discus limbo atm! So much to do and so little time!
I can only assume my bills are lower because I never had uninsulated tanks in the winter time. But I do know I'm using 150w heaters on 55g tanks and they have no problems raising the temp to 93 if needed. My highest electric bill in the winter time has been about $60, but I only have about 8 tanks running.

Anyway, if you are running multiple tanks and don't care what the sides look like then I think this is definately worth the investment!!!
I'll tanks some pics later on today...
