    .

how are you changing water? a turkey baster? and, how much? 100%?

i hope i never have to raise any fry artificially, but this is always good to know.

    Hi Pat,
Here are couple of ways to change the water in the bowls, one way is to use
a strainer and another way is to use a siphon. The waterchanges are usually
    99%.

    Dear Cliff

Many thanks MAR (Master of Artificial Raising) for all these material information. I heard from one of my friends that we could feed the fries on the first three days milk powder is it true? Changing 99% of water without removing the remaining quantity of the yoke from the side of the bowl.

    Best regards,
    Tariq

    Tariq,
Milk powder for the first three day, is correct the type of powder milk would
be the kind use for human babys, sold under the name EfantMilk(spell?). This
is the formula if you want an divorce. You will be sleeping with the alarm clock by yourself.

Baby food powder, wow. The mix you use and recommend is still the powdered egg yolk, right? Can you use powdered whole eggs? Like they use in the army to make scrambled eggs? I've also heard you can use the stuff they feed to baby brine shrimp or artificial plankton & rotifers powder. I've only tried the fresh egg yolk (boiled/raw mix).

    Hi Kacey,
The best egg yolk I recommend when first starting the artificial raising would
be the Bakers egg yolk, the second best egg yolk that I have used was egg
yolk purchase at a store called the Co-Op, now this was back in the 60's in
Berkeley, California, and the third recommeded egg yolk would be the Army
surplus type, this is back in the 80's and the last egg yolk type would
be from the food bank. Whole powdered eggs, maybe the Army's Surplus
was or is a whole egg, but it really stick well to the bowls. I have never tried
the artificial plankton stuff but Bing Seto used it plus the egg yolk.
As for the fresh egg yolk that works very well but it does not give the breeder
    a single margin of error.

    Cliff,
Thats some great info. Berkeley in the 60's huh? No telling WHAT they were feeding those CO-OP chickens back then. I definitly will take the time to find some bakers yolk and see if that will increase my survival rait. On my first two tries I was only able to keep less than half alive. About 20 out of 50 fry. They would die one by one in the first 3 days and then no more losses after 4th day. I don't know what kills half and leaves the other half fine.
    Thanks,

    Kacey

Kacey. Puget Sound Co-op I believe is right across from the statues at the freemont bridge there. Might try calling there.

Thanks Greg, will do. I know someone localy has that stuff and I hate paying shipping when it's more than the price of what you're buying.

I hope Cliff doesn't mind but I cut this piece of info off one of his replies in the thread just to show that he's been there done that and been recognized for his knowledge on a scientific level since the 90's...

"I have also given lectures monthly for 5 years at the California Academy of Science under the
direction of San Francisco Aquarium Society, on all topics concerning raising
and breeding Discus. Annually Discus hatchery visits trip to local breeders were organized, yearly open house to my hatchery were available for
members where they can physically see how the artifically tech is done."

I love it when Cliff chimes in with his wisdom and insight from his vast knowledge and experience!
