Default 65 gallon, how many fish?

My plan is to upgrade to a 65 high. I'm gonna use a Emporer 400 and a HOT Magnum with Bio-Wheel Pro 30. Can I squeeze 8 fish in that tank? I feel good about 7 but it doesn't represent all the colors I want.

    Hi,

I don't think 8 is a problem as long as you keep up with water changes and keep the tank clean (ie: wiping down sides, etc).

If were talking 8 adults and If it is planted I would say no. If bare bottom and several cleanings a week your probably ok. If were talking juvs then for now your definitely fine. It's better not to push it with discus unless your a water change machine!

My experience has been that longer tanks are better than higher tanks. There is more swimming room for your fish if the tank has more surface area.

dax 29 what are the dimensions of your tank because if its the same 65 gallon tall I have it actually works out to 70 gallons. Big als advertised that it was only 65 I have no idea why. 36 x 18 x 25 = 16200......16200/231
    = 70.13 gallons

This tank I'm talking about is 48X13X24. The lfs store here has them. I like to change water in 2 of my 4 tanks about twice a week and the other 2 I do every 7-10 days. I'm going to 2 tanks at 7 - 10 days and the 65 that will house the discus I'm planning on going barebottom with 4"+ discus. That tank will get changes about every other day or at least 2X a week.

ya i'm no expert but I know you can put 8 adult discus in that tank if its bb and you do 3 wc a week. you could do only two but three will make fish healthier and seriuously when there healthy it's more for your enjoyment. Rather then them being sick and you have to spend hours a day trying to care for sick fish. If you only want to do 2wc a week then keep only 6 adults.

If you wanna overstock a tank you gotta take care of that water, if your only gonna do water changes 1x or 2x a week i would stick with the 10g per discus.

Yes, I also go with the more discus, more water changes. I had 8 in a 65 gallon when juvies and ended up buying a 90 gallon to put them in. Sold some to a friend and now have 6 left in the 90 gallon. They are a year old and sometimes, that tank can get too small. Especially when they start to tail slap or chase others.

And I was doing daily water changes and had bare bottom on these tanks when the fish were small.

Well this thread answered my question. I just put 8 juvies in a 75 gal. Butt I change 25 to 35 gallons a day.

    Brian,

If they're juveniles.. WC every day.

Dood brought up a good point, but didn't expand on it, so... lol

The only downside to a tall tank is that you loose surface space, and therefore have less area for gas exchange. Not a problem though so long as you keep plenty of surface turbulance, which your bio wheels should do (o2 in, c02 out) and keep up the water quality. If you have an air pump, an airstone couldn't hurt.
