I keep whiteworms. Grindals, from what I've read, are only half the size of whiteworms. And I thought we determined last time that whiteworms aren't as fatty as most think....

What food cultures do you grow to feed your fish? For example, my discus will not eat beefheart so I am going to try a grindal worm culture and see if they eat them. I have microworm culture growing for my goby babies because they are so tiny and need "live" food. A lot of people will not feed their discus CBWs, so what do you "grow" as a live food at home for yours?
Grindal worms are almost like white worms but they can be grown in higher temps and are not as fatty as them. To make sure they are filled with the proper nutritions feed the worms flake food

I don't have a specific or dedicated culture but I get brandling worms(red wrigglers) from my compost heap.

Comfortably numb.
Hi Everone,
I have whiteworm culture going at present. Just feed them with white bread with crust cut off and slightly wetted.
Works well for me, but in Scotland we don't have the high temps!!!!!!!

Just red wigglers

I have white worms. Grindal worms are smaller than white worms. I find that my adult discus love white worms. I always thought that WW were high in fat and fed them once or twice a week. The recent thread changed my mind and now I feed them regularly. Often sick discus after treatment will not accept most foods. But white worms are always accepted.
My worm culture is at least 5 years old and going strong.

I also feed my Discus white worms.
I Got 6 - 2 1/2 inch Discus a month ago. They must have been fed blood worms and Beef heart, their favorite food.
Now it is white worms once a day, and they love them .
I also feed Grindal worms, but it is mostly for my cories in the same tank.
Thanks to nature any puddle of water here will grow mosquito larvae and bloodworms after some time. I just keep guppies in the plant propagation buckets..
When science and magic collide, the story begins.
Red wigglers, Daphnia, mosquito larvea. I'm thinking about crickets but from what I've read they seem like a bit of a PITA. It says they stink...A fish buddy told me that nothing makes fry grow like cricket egg cases. He says that you squeeze the egg cases out in the fish tanks and the fry go for them like crazy.

How do you grow your cultures? I would like to make this thread a learning tool if we can for people who are interested in growing their own live food.

Years ago I used to feed wingless fruit flys. My discus seemed to like them. You can get a culture at a reptile swap.
If you breed the wingless fruitflies, don't you get bloodworms?
.......
Thanks, Paul...I remember growing out live bloodworms and attempting to cultur them but it was a pita keeping the flys contained... I thought the 'wingless' was developed to solve that...
