I am very sorry to hear you are not feeling well. Have the doctors tested you for all forms of Hepatitis?
Have you been in any foreign countries?
Does anyone know if any disease or bacterial infections can be transferred to people from our tanks. Ive been battling a liver infection for a while now ( two months) and the doctors cant figure out the cause or even what it is. I had heard something about someone getting sick from their fish tanks once, and wanted to see if anyone knows anything about this.
Sincerely, Chris

Chris,
I am sorry to hear you are unwell. There has been an article in practical fishkeeping recently about salmonella in aquria, not sure how valid it was. I am aware that certain types of Tuberculosis can spread form open wounds on infected fish to humans too, scary thought and heaven forbid thats what has happened.
I would be tempted to get some scrubbing alcohol and scrub down after each time you maintain the tanks, just in case.
Whatever it is I hope you and the docs find the reason and then the cure very soon. Take care of your self.

Hi Chris,
I am real sorry to hear that. There are diseases you can get from your fish...They are called zoonotic...or zoonosis...
Some that come to mind...bacterias like citrobacter, Edwardsiella tarda, and Mycobacterium marinum ( and many other TB related bacterias)

Thanks for the info, ill let my Dr. know about these things and she if these things have been tested for. I am pretty sure they already ruled out forms of hepatitis.
So have i just been plain ignorant. Does everyone wear gloves when doing tank maintenance or water changes?
Sincerely, Chris
Just so you know there are many diffrent strains of hep some not common to where you live. You may want to look into it.
I hope you'll be fully recovered soon Chris...I am truly sry to hear about this.

Thanks Paul, Al, Kenny, and Trakurt for your thoughts and concerns.

Pseudomonas is a common discus pathogen (severe systemic, urinary, lung, and even artificial implant- knees , hips, valve infections. The mycobacterium species found in water case a disease called fish handlers disease (not common, it's a leprosy like disease). Cynobacter is a common water borne disease aswell (diarrhea). Of these I'd worry about pseudomonas, they often occur with polyresistance to anibiotics, common in hospital and infections of immunocompromised people. Many aquahobbyist use antibiotics left and right, soo I suspect there are many resistant microbes in our aquariums.
The only one I know that is contagious is fish TB (tuberculosis).
Ignorant would not be the word of my choice, Chris. In reality the risks are very low, real but low.
I do not were gloves when doing tank maintenance, never have either. I do wash up before and after each session though. I think following common sense practices and not ignoring any abnormal reactions will go a long way to ensuring good health.
Hope its sorted soon.

Chris,
sorry to hear.
give the medicines you ussed on your tanks a thought. There are and were a bunch of them that can have a negative effects on us human and no I don't use gloves.

I got citrobacter and klebsiella from sucking on the siphon for my wet dry filter, some years ago; the other ones I have heard of being problematic have already been listed. I think the likelihood is low but certainly real.
A few of you folks who send fish out to pathologists for study when you get big batches in might list names/institutions where a person could possibly connect with an icthyologist who can give more concrete info here?
Sorry you've been ill, hope they get you figured out and fixed up fast.
Best regards
Harriett
