What did he do for his gravel? Did he mix sand with aqua soil? Would that work?

Oh ya lol. Do you know if someone could put a bag of a plant helping gravil and then cap it with sand? The reason i want to know is because all of the plant helping gravil is black and black gravil makes my discus turn a darker color

It can be done but due to a difference in densities the different types of substrates eventually tend to become mixed.
If the total depth of the substrates allowed I suppose one could use nylon fly screen to keep the different types descretely separated.
