Default When sword plants grow big

We had a club meeting last weekend and one of the members, had pulled out his Veronica sword (also know as Echinodorus "Red Diamond") from his 125 gallon tank.

Keep in mind for MOST people (even says so on Tropica's website), this sword plant stays medium sized, but when conditions are right, it can grow very large.

LOL! I had a few Red Mellon Swords that were almost that big.

I thought they were cool, but was a little mad that most people and websites said they make a good fore to mid ground plant because of their small size. Well mine didn't stay small for long in my 125.

Edit: looking at the picture again I'd say my Red Melons were a little taller just not as full as the sword pictured. They had a few runners that stretched around 4'.

    Walter,
Are you sure about the species name? It's hard to tell looking at it like that but it actually looks more like it belongs in the E. osiris group to me. Do you have a picture of a flower?

Looks like a mother plant straight from Tropica's greenhouses. Just goes to show what is possible when you meet your plants' needs.
I had a Echinodorus bleheri that was potted in a whiskey glass and has two time release fertilizer sticks and it grew to fill 2/3 of a 40 gallon tank. I had expected it to not get that large because of the small size of the pot.

It's Echinodorus "veronica", also known as "red diamond". I know, because the man holding it is the person who first imported it.

    Tropica has a description here:

    and an article here:

and here is a photo of the flower:

    Hope that clears things up!
