    Exclamation Silicone warning

    Hi all,
For years I and many others have used GE silicone as an aquarium Sealant.. I went to buy some the other day and noticed that Both Type 1 and 2 both are now made with some kind of mold inhibitor... BIOSEAL..

    http://www.geadvancedmaterials.com/g...l/bioseal.html

I would not advise using the GE Silicone anylonger if it has this additive.

There used to be one that said not for aquariums and one that did not list it as " not for aquariums"..That was the one that was used...even though it didn't say it was aquarium safe...now both say not for aquariums and contain that new additive.

    Thanks for the Links Tim,
Lowes sells The Dap Sealer here...Its what I went with when I saw the GE Label change.... Its a bit more expensive than the GE, but still far cheaper than dead fish.......

    the 2.8fl oz was enough to do a 40Gal tank...barely...and thats only $4.00 .

I just know alot of people, particularly old timers use the GE...Its come up before here...

    Take care,

    Good Info to have

I've always been a little leary and just bought the ones that are marked "aquarium sealant" just to play safe. Costs A LOT more, but like AL said, cheaper than dead fish

Not to be a wise guy, but that should be "siliconE", silicon is what computer chips are made of.

A razor blade and some elbow grease. I clean up the sides with some steel wool afterwards. It gets the last of the residue off.

    Ya,
I have most of it off with a Razor already but I saw somewhere on the forums that there is a "Cleaner" that gets off the little parts still stuck...

Thanks for the heads up Brew....I was ready to fix 2 50 gallon tanks today...I have 2 tubs of the GE Silicone...I thought the label looked different. I guess I will head down to Lowe's later on today and get the DAP...
