180 Discus Tank

Wondering what a gph figure for a 180 discus tank should be?
I'm planning to use an Eheim 2260 (500gph), and have a sump system which I want to add as well-hence my question. Really asking what the pump for the sump should be. Thx in advance.

the idea is to have a 4 times turnover of water per hour. (or more... but consider current on fish as well)

so 180 * 4 = 720 gph

but that's 720 gph out of the pipe in the tank, so you have to consider the lost because of height so if you go for a mag drive and we suppose that water has to travel 5' in height, according to the chart

we know that the 950pgh mag drive will give you 750 gph in your tank.

The loss in height of 5 feet is very minimal. I agree with dandestroy, I would keep the turnover rate at 4 times or more. Being a 180 gal tank you will be able to get away with a higher turnover due to the size of the tank. There is a lot of tank area to distribute the current without being too strong for discus.

Just figure out what you need in terms of plumbing(height, lenght couplings, ball valves etc) enter them and compare the outputs of the mayor pump brands out there

If you are soft plumbing(vynil tubing) don't worry about it, just go for 5 time turnover or more so that you are above the 4 times mark
