    Default red/white discus aquarium

    Hello everyone,

Two months after starting my aquarium, I finally got some discus
yesterday. I think they look stunning.

I've read it's agains forum rules to post big pictures, so here are some links
to my homepage with higher resolution pictures

Any comments on them (constructive, please

One question, the plant which the neons are swimming above is turning yellow and getting holes.
I've tried adding iron one week ago (testing-test says there is 0.1 mg/l) - but it doesn't seem to help
Any ideas on how to resurrect it?

And another question, the pump is in the right back corner. In which direction should I let the water flow? Past the back
of the aquarium, or downwards towards the center/front direction? Or should I let it spray upwards so the surface is moving?

    Regards

I think you'd be surprised to see the difference if you went to white sand.

Yeah... I know the blue sand... A few months ago, my aquarium was going
really bad - algae and stuff to the point where I was about to quit entirely.

Then me and my wife agreed to try if with plants only for a few weeks as
a last shot (and either it works, or we stop) - and on an impulse to have something completely different we got the blue sand...

Fortunately it worked out great, so now - 2 months later - we finally got
to the point where we said "there have to be some fish in there).

When deciding on which fish to get we used photoshop to put in all kind
of different discus and red or white looked the best (blue fish didn't fit
at all). Then in the shop I noticed these cuties, and I was sold.

Next time I remake the aquarium (in a year+ or so), I'm going to
    go "back to normal"..

The date on the post is 2007 mate. Not sure about our other sponsors current stock list but I know Dennis's Discus Fish has red/whites at the moment, though the ones pictures here look more like young red melons. Check out his website at www.dennisdiscusfish.com
You'll see his red melons look like the fish pictured above....

I was thinking the same, Dano. I have Red/White. The white is more pronounced below the dorsal fin traveling back toward the tail. Kenny always has Red/White in various sizes. I understood, correct me if I am wrong, that the peppering has something to do with the fish's attempt to camouflage to its habitat. In other words a bare tank Red/White or other would have less peppering in a bare tank as opposed to a black sand tank. Is true? Book 'em, Dano!

I don't know much about peppering except that it is a PB trait, and that as the years have rolled by good quality PB strains show less of it except when crossed with non PB strains. Environmentsl factors, like dark background/substrate, play a roll for sure. Al's thoughts are intriguing for sure, and the pair profiled in this post by Kathy can hopefully shed some light.
