Don't use acid. Purchase a Reverse Osmosis water filter to lower the conductivity of your water.

Acid can produce deadly results if not used properly and is rarely need anyway...

With a pH of 5.5 already, I'd leave it just where it is , give the pair a private tank and see what kind of hatch rates you get.. Filtering thru peat would help lower the hardness as well... just be careful to monitor the pH...

I am really confused if you water is in the 5's for PH, why are you trying to lower it more. If you go lower you will be in the danger zone of killing your fish because everything becomes very unstable below that.

For spawning you do want your water on the acid side but your water is already on the acid side so you don't need to mess with that part of it. As long as it is 6.5 and lower you should be fine with spawning.

Hi if your tap water is 7.5 and your aquarium water is 5.5....How are you lowering it?

Unless you have some type of buffer in your water like crushed coral or shells, then the pH cannot go higher. It's a slow, but continually dropping number

That's why i decided to make other aquarium water nearer to natural by osmos.
