Hi Karen, welcome to Simply you will love this site and all the info + great people.
My deepest condolences to you and your family.

Hi,
I am new to Discus....but know that I would love to share my home with a couple....
I started fish keeping in the early 70's salt tanks did that for about 15 years. Oh yes the most sophisticated equipment we had back then Hydrometer and UGF~~~~retired from aquarium hobby for a decade or 2. Fast forward.
Several years ago I had to take the car from Mom, became her personal chauffeur and everything else. So before I would come home I started stopping by LFS's to decompress... One day 3 Goldfish came home with me. The freshwater journey began. I love my GF but as we have losses I will not replace. I have a used 50G cube that I am going to replace soon with a Acrylic one. This will be our Discus tank. Well that is why I am here to learn...and meet new friends. These are beautiful shy creatures and from what I have read really need to do your homework to set up and perfect system. That is what we will do.
This may be a year in the making but will get there.
Looking forward to getting to meet you'all

Sorry on your loss,

Welcome to the forum Karen, but keep in mind you don't need "the perfect system" to keep discus, just some good old fashion water quality.
Sorry about you loss.
Scott

One thing you will find with experience is that discus arent the shy creatures most think they are. They do get startled but rebound instantly. Wait till they have eggs in the tank and you put your hand in there to clean.....they arent so shy then
Once you gain their trust, they will meet and greet you every time you walk in the room and you will be able to pet some of them. Afterall....you will be their FOOD GOD! Sorry to hear of your loss and welcome to the insane world of discus keeping.
