    Default Hikari Frozen Discus Formula

I guess Hikari has a new Bio-Pure Discus formula. Does anyone know anything about this food? Doesn't seem to be on the market yet.

Hikari has updated their description of Discus Bio-Pure (link).

Here are the ingredients in order:
"shrimp, squid, brine shrimp, spirulina, water, pyridoxine, beta carotene, L-ascorbyl-2-polyphlosphate (stabalized vitamin C), vitamin B12, riboflavin, thiamine mononitrate, biotin, choline chloride, folic acid, pantothenic acid, inositol, niacin."

    Here is the guaranteed analysis:
    " Crude Protein 6.9% Min.
    Crude Fat 1.8% Min.
    Crude Fiber 1.3% Max.
    Moisture 86.0% Max."

Isn't that kinda low on the protein analysis?

I read that Hikari takes their analysis from wet samples whereas most food manufacturers take their analysis from dry samples. So that explains why the protein reading is so low. If you were to take a dry sample from Hikari's food you'll probably get the same type of protein percentage, if not more.

    So it's safe to use

    Hi,
Looks like this food will be ok as "candy" not as food.
Not enough protein and other ingridiens to grow discus and keep them in good shape.

But the analysis they give is based on wet weight. If Hikari took a dry weight sample like other food manufacturers the protein percentage would go way up as well as everything else.

Well, living creatures have about 80%-90% of water anway. You have to take that out when you compare to dry foods. I don't know how you can have 21% of protien in your frozen food, unless you are loading it with dry flakes with the fresh meat. Otherwise, at least 80% of water is a giving to any frozen food.

    Somehow 81.6% + 21.4% add up more than 100%

the keywords are the MAX and MIN. meaning that there is room for variance.
