Al, Great interview. Can't believe the things u do. If i could do just some of them............ I saw discus in lfs stores and always liked them but were told no way, they r too hard to keep. Well, I can say not hard, but alot of work.
Since i became a member, i have learned sooooooooo much from this site, i can't believe it. I want to personnally thank u for this opportunity to have these kings in my aquarium. If it weren't for Simply, i would still long for these beautiful fish, now i am living it. Still have a lot to learn, but ease of mind knowing everyone is here to help
U rule, and so does everyone else that is willing to give up their knowledge for someone who only new what discus were by sight...
Eileen
Fashionably late I see!

Hi Al:
It's great to read ur interview and see so many pics of your discus. Wow, you have a lotta fish I've been so busy I didn't realize we had the opportunity to pose questions! Okay, if you don't mind I have just a couple!
When ur down in the hobby how do you recharge and keep going?
What are the most common issues you see facing discus hobbiests and do you have any advise for them?
thanks,
Sandeep
Hi Sandeep,
okay...just these last few questions...
When ur down in the hobby how do you recharge and keep going?
Friends.... many times over the years friends on this forum have been there for me....
It helps to talk with others that have gone thru what you are going thru... The power of a friend is some of the strongest medicine.
Sometimes they just listen, sometimes they threaten to fly in from where ever and "talk" to me..
and then sometimes the best way to recharge is just take a few steps back, knowing that you'll soon be taking many more forward.
What are the most common issues you see facing discus hobbiests and do you have any advise for them?
I would have said disease and quality if you asked me a year ago... but I think we have made a lot of headway in these areas..
. I see less disease issues posted now than in the past and what is posted is not as severe.. Education and adequate Quarantine make a big difference I think....
Discus Quality as well has really gone up... again...education is key there..An informed customer makes better decisions..
I think the most common issue s these days are water related... I think in general the most important element in discus husbandry thats the most little understood is water.. I'd suggest that everyone keeping discus take the time to learn about your water chemistry....Its probably one of the most important factors in discus health.
hth,
al
