Its marlin season up in North Queensland so l organized a couple of trips up to Cairns to spend some time on a game boat and enjoy what the Great barrier Reef has to offer.
Since l was traveling up north anyways l thought I'd also spend a week with some good friends that live in Cape York and at the top tip of Australia. They know of an island called Crab Island where flat back turtles come up on the beach at night to lay their eggs. It's also one of the only few places in the world where crocodiles congregate for an easy feed during this time. Since we were spending the night there we had to find some high ground up on the sand dunes to stay out of reach of them. While up on the Cape l also wanted to tick another one of my fish species off my bucket list....Saratoga.
I was lucky to get the timing right for the trip with the locals running a cultural festival which l found very interesting.

I also caught plenty of Archer Fish.
Archer fish squirt jets of water to knock off insects off branches to eat. With the high humidity up at the cape we also came across lots of Green Tree Frogs. I really love nature, and this is a really good spot to see lots of it.

Next stop was Cairns to celebrate the 50th anniversary for when the first 1000lb (a grander) Black Marlin was caught out from there. That grander marlin put Cairns on the marlin map, and is now considered the Black Marlin Capital of the World. More grander Black Marlin get caught and released from Cairns than anywhere else in the world combined. It was a big deal for the region, and a fitting large bronze statue was put up to commemorate it

Its always great spending time on the great barrier reef, and this trip was no different. We caught and released plenty of marlin, and spotted many small whale sharks while fishing for marlin.

We use a variety of lures, but also freshly caught fish, consisting of tunas, mackerel, and scad

I love fishing! Granted I am not the avid fisherman like you but I do love it. I went deep sea fishing once and didn't catch a thing, some of my friends managed to catch a flounder or two. I just fish in one of our small local lakes, and have plans to go up north to a friends cabin and fish off their lake next month. I have pics that I can post later when I get home. It just some catfish I caught nothing fancy. By the way my heart totally melted when I saw the pics of the turtles above How cool is that, I am so jealous

Hi Aja. Thanks for sharing that, and l look forward to seeing your pics on here later on. Yes we saw lots of adults turtles coming up on the beach and dig holes to lay eggs. It was amazing! We also saw lots of baby turtles hatching and making their way to the breakers. We had to turn our head lamps off because they were attracted to the light, as they do with the moon. We even managed to see some emerge from their nests. I have plenty of footage, and once l have time to edit it, l'll put it on here.

Beautiful fish Joe. I look forward to doing some fishing in tropical places one day. Fortunately I grew up on the California SF bay area delta where there is some amazing fishing. I remember fishing bass tournaments with my dad as a kid. I remember fishing off of a dock in my grandfather's backyard catching sunfish, bass, bluegil and catfish all day long.

My dad just bought 10 acres up in northeastern California.
Most of the rivers and creeks are all trophy catch and release for trout and salmon. Quite fortunate he is not far from the famous eagle lake where they have their own famous strain of massive trout. First time I get up there to rip some lips I'll post some pix

I have very done little fresh water fishing for trout, but have caught both rainbow and brown trout her in Australia as well as New Zealand. I love wadding through little streams with pristine waters....its very relaxing. I look forward to see what you get up to on your dad's new block.

It's funny I just ran across this thread. I just got into fishing once I moved to jersey. Started off with bass and lake fishing and quickly moved into catfish, particularly flatheads. Then I became addicted to shore fishing. I absolutely love sharks! One day when I finally strike it rich in powerball I'll finally get my black tip tank going... Haven't been inshore or offshore yet but I will this next summer. All fish were catch and release.

Thanks for sharing your pictures Paul. Well done!

Cat fish are not rated very high here in Australia. I dont know why because they sure put up one hell of a fight, as do those stingrays and sharks. I hope you get to do some more salt water fishing, as there is lots of different species to target out there. Keep us posted.

    Thanks all!

Surprisingly the flathead pictured here was the 3rd one I caught. It was a 26lber and put up one hell of a fight. Thought it was gonna be the trophy fish of the night but my two buddies hooked into a 35lber the same time. Crossed each other's lines and hooked it mouth and tail. Frickin classic one uppers!

just found this thread. cool pics!

i love fishing, loved it before fish keeping.

as a kid small streams, later a lot of river, and lakes, but all fresh water.

i surf fish now once a year, and recently bay fished in NJ, caught flounder.
-surf i've caught shark, skate, croacher, sea trout, etc. but never shark the size woopaul shows

    never deep sea.

recent fish story of was a channel cat in river. son hooked it, we thought he was snagged, but it was a 30"+ cat. nearly pulled him over!

    Thanks Jack
Those catfish get very large and powerful. Lots of fun on rod and real. My wife's first large fish was a saltwater catfish. She was on it for about 40 minutes and insisted that l take photos to put up on my brag board.
Wouldn't have a clue what species of catfish it is though
