I used to breed Angels & fed live Daphnia to fry.
Freezing Daphnia dramatically depletes their food value.
Link below is a good read on all aspects of Daphnia.

I tried using the Hikari frozen daphnia but they are so small that the fish ignored them when the cube started melting in the water.

    True that.
    Freezing pops their exoskeloten.
So, you are feeding fish....dapnia soup & empty shells.

But, for young fry, live daphnia fit the menu well.
I think the movement of live daphnia, trigger a hunting instinct, in fry.
Daphnia flit around, fry spot them & the hunt begins.

When I used to keep just tetras and other community fish I would catch daphnia from the local ponds and the fish would go wild over them . Nowadays with discus, I would be wary of feeding them live daphnia unless I had my own culture going.

    From the link I posted.
    http://www.caudata.org/daphnia/

"It is recommended that you obtain your daphnids from a fish-free lake/pond for two reasons: a fish-free lake/pond will mean there is more chance of obtaining daphnia because there will be less predators to eat them, and also if you're planning on using daphnia as live food for fish, daphnia from a fish-free lake/pond will almost be guaranteed disease free. "

With those, start your own culture:
