Hi,
Due to the dietary restrictions, I dont bring any beef products home. I know discus love beef heart. but are there any non-beef recepies that you can suggest that discus might take readily?
May be sometihng with turkey, chicken or shrimp which are high in protine.
thank you

99% fat free turkey breast and salmon both can be substituted for BH. Mix with equal amounts of shrimp as the basis of your mix.

Mat,
Most of the Salmon that I see locally is farm raised...do you see any difference with this type of Salmon and Tilapia...Personally I have been using Cod lately...

Re: Any Non-Beef food recepies
Dan,
Living here on the Puget Sound, I simply buy freshly netted Chum Salmon from the Native fisherman along the Puyallup River. Every other year when the Pink Salmon run, they can be picked up as well earlier in the season. Most people out here don't eat Pink or Chum Salmon. We can buy a 12-15 pound Chum for $5.00 apiece during the spawning run. Cod is more expensive, although at times I add it or use Pollack, and I don't use any freshwater fish in my food mix. So that rules out Tilapia.

I agree no fresh water fish...I wish I could get a 15 lb Salmon for $5...I would take 200 lbs...

We're lucky out here, Dan. Last year I bought three fish, 42lbs. total weight. $15.00. That's the whole fish, of course, so there's waste, but it was still well under a dollar a pound cleaned. Chum salmon out here are on about the same level as carp back East. Pet food, garden fertilizer, and steelheaders catch them just for the roe for steelhead bait.
