    Default From Bad to Worse

With the three remaining discus in the challenge tank, things were not getting any better. Dark in colour, still off their food, and occasianlly thrashing aroung hitting the glass, things were not looking good.
Yesterday, l decided to dose the tank with salt at a rate of one table spoon per 10gl, and hope that things would settle down a bit.

I woke this morning to find 2 more discus dead, leaving one more in there on its lonesome. I feel that l have failed these fish......but still don't know where l went wrong. I think all l can do now is continue with the daily water change, and hope he pulls through.

Meanwhile, in the planted tank, the other 4 challenge fish are eating well, and looking good. Needless to say though, l have noticed very little growth.

    Hi Joe,

This is pretty sad, I'm sorry to hear about this.

    Somethings to think about...

You had a group of discus in tank that were fine...split the group...half to a planted tank..half stayed... The half that stayed have been having issues...the half in the planted tank are fine.

two things that comes to mind...
...something may be wrong with the water in the sick fishes tank... do you do a different water change regime between the bare grow out..and your planted tank...most do.... if so..I'd question my water supply...is this municipal water?

.... the med you dosed with..in your water parameters may have been toxic... I knew someone that could not use the medication ...fluke tabs in her water....she experienced multiple deaths on multiple occasions when she used it...I've never had an issue once....I can only attribute to water differences.

Sorry you lost them...on the off chance that the problem was due to something contagious...watch that planted tank closely.

    hth,
    al

    Thanks for your comments Al.
Yes it is municipal water supply. The water is comming out from the same tap for both tanks. The only differance is that l am aging the water in a container with airstones and heater, for the Challenge tank. Yet with the planted tank it is going in direct from the tap, but only doing about a 20% change ever other day or so.
Every thing was going so well too! This has sure knocked me down a few pegs.

    Joe,
Check with your water supplier to see if they have been working on the lines in your area....when they do they need to flush the lines to remove any nasties....the chemicals used can kill your fish...

also ask if they switched to chloramines...aerating won't remove these...

Other things that they can do is treat a supply lake with algacides

The planted tank may have been spared by the smaller volume of water you change, the increased organic load, and the plants filtering action.

    Just some thoughts..

Joe, this is terrible news; I'm sorry to hear you've had more deaths. Head up, though and keep a close eye on the remaining little one. Good luck buddy.

    Joe,
sorry to hear youl ost a couple more of your fish,as Al said this could be due to nasties being added to your water, I have had big trouble in the past with them working on pipes and changing water clorinators, Also sometimes when you have a group of fish going well and you remove some, They can feel al ittle in secure with less numbers, Mate keep your head up and move on it happens to the best , you certainly have not failed the fish !

    cheers

    Oh Joe,
I'm terribly sorry for the bad news, it is so odd that one batch would do fine and the other have trouble ? Something to say for plants though, they may have been soaking up what ever could of been in the water. I know our water supply changes where I live. there is lots of snow here and our summer water supply is different from our winter water supply. Are you planning on moving the one remaining little guy to the planted tank ?

    Thanks Marie.
Thanks B. Yes, eventially l will transfer him into the planted tank, but will wait till he comes good, just incase he has some kind of disease.
The last thing l want now is to contaminate the planted tank.
Eventually, l wish to, start a new cycle in the Challenge tank, and transfer four challenge fish back in there, and feed, feed, feed.
By then l'll have some catching up to do.

I am sorry to hear of this bad news Joe! I cant say much more than what has been said already as far as a culprit. I know that you were having fun with them.

Is there anything that could of got on your hands and maybe not washed off good before you put your hands in the tank? I wash and rinse my hands really good before I put them in any of my tanks. I use rubbing alcohol most of the time.

Again, Sorry to hear this, but on the bright side, you still have 5 left!
