PVC piping for Bio media

Hi Everyone,

Anyone ever try taking a thin, 1 inch thick PVC pipe and slicing it up into 1/2- 1 inch long pieces and using it as a bio filtration media for wet dry drip filter? I looked into purchasing some bio balls and they are just obscenely expensive for little pieces of plastic.

If you wanted to do that it would work just fine. I just don't know if I could go through all of that work.

Nylon monofilament pot scrubbers work great.
Pot scrubbers can often be found at Dollar stores, 6 to 8 for a buck.
I have also used old soaker hose, cut up.

Take your PVC pipe and turn it down in a lathe by inserting a wooden dowel and screwing through the pipe and dowel on one end. Instant BioBale. You can literally make a kitchen trash bag full of media for a couple of dollars. If you are set on a "media" per-se, contact Jaeger, http://www.jaeger.com/ Their pall rings have good surface area and there is no minimum order. e-Bay can be another source of media. I purchased 16 cubic feet of Dupla BioKaskades for 60.00 with shipping. It became very popular within the last couple of years for marine keepers to remove the media from their trickle towers and just sink live rock into the sump.

Sweet! That is just what I need, I found a chart that said these had a great surface area and were cheap, I asked the wife how much they cost and she says "$3 or $4 apiece". I scratched that quick but now showed her this pic and she says "oh those, yeah they aren't really good potscrubbers, I thought you meant a real one".
