    Default Breeding Cone Screen

Joe here again. for the 6th spawn, the eggs made it to around 36-40 hours, and when I came home one or both of them had one heck of a snack. When I left for work (36 hour mark), there were around 150 amber colored eggs remaining.

Is this proof they are fertile, since none left were white?

Also, if I use a breeding cone screen, how far should it be from the eggs, and when do I remove it?

    Thank You my friends!

    Hi Jgunja,

You cant really be sure the eggs are fertile until you actually see wigglers.Anyway, I make my breeding cones to be as close to the eggs as possible without touching them. My guess is about 1/4". The cones are a bit harder to get close since the top is smaller. I don't think you have to get real close. Below are examples of my mesh that I use. Hope it helps.

Are you using stainless steel or galvinsed? The cone protector looks functional. I cant believe though that on the slate protector the parents little fishy mouths won't be able to reach and eat the eggs.

One thing to remember also is make sure the parents have enough room to fan the eggs. So.....if they lay high on the cone then the screen needs to be close enough for them but far enough away so they can't eat.

Angela is absolutely right. Experiment a bit and you'll get it right.
I'll tell ya, I just picked up whatever OSH had at the time. Not a real handyman, so couldn't even tell ya. I thought it was aluminum.

Ok, here's my question. If a pair is eating eggs and you mesh them, will they then leave the fry alone and not eat them?

    Hi Mickey,

My experience has been that once wigglers come, I remove the cone, and the parents will tend to them. I did have 1 pair that ate the wigglers after removing the cone ( on their 3rd spawning ) On their fourth spawning, they took care of babies.

    Good luck,

    Mickey,
As long as the fry can fit in their mouths they can be eaten any sec.
