well for starters ..they are very quiet when running , they are a 3 stage/chamber filter were i think your 400 would be a two stage . you can run them with carbon or without , or add extra sponge or an extra bio media in place of the carbon. and there price is good .

QUOTE...I want more water movement and extra filtration than the Emperor

not sure that you would get any more movement that your 400 but if you added to your tank it would Deff. help with filtration and movement . hope this helps

Well, the Emperor is made to introduce the water quietly and does a good job but because of this, the other side of my tank has no water movement. If I put flakes in, they'll stay there until the fish find them in the floating plants.

I think in another thread, I read that some people take the carbon out and throw in another sponge like you said. Other than housing more good bacteria in the second sponge is there a reason you wouldn't want carbon? I'll have it anyways in my Emperor so I will probably throw in the second sponge.

Also, what does the Bio Media do?

Provides a large amount of surface area for biological filter Bacteria to colonize.

aquaclears have alot of space for sponges. plain and simple. some filters have little skinny slots for preformed pads you slide in. bigger the sponge and area to cram things in the better. work good..maintenance free.
i cram my hydro sponges in. then if i need one..i take it out..and move it to a new tank .
is the one onn the sale the biggest one? im confused iwth the new numbers. i know 200 , 300, 500 aquaclears. if its the small one..that seems to be a high price period. not sure i pay that much up here..maybe for the 500 one. been awhile though..since i bought one or priced them.

    April,

The biggest one which is the 110 and is for tanks up to 110 gallons is the one they are referring to. It's on that website for about $80 and most pet shops have it for $100. I think I saw it last night at a LFS for $95. So, if I were to buy it, I would probably just get it at the LFS because after shipping I'm at about the same price.

Here is a link for the A/C 110 that I found, it's the cheapest I've found so far.
