Default Frozen and Dried Tubifex ?

Is it ok to feed discus with those Frozen and Dried Tubifex cubes ? My discus love it more than anything else. They love to tear off the cube and fight for it. then they start eat when everything start float on surface.

Once I was told by a petshop owner Dried Tubifex has no Nutrition which Discus need. Is that true ?

Most do not feed tubifex due to the risk of them carrying parasites and disease into fish, which is more likely than blood worms, black worms, and most other foods...even if freeze dried.

Yup, they sure do. Read about how they are cultivated, nasty stuff.

I have completely eliminated FBW or any worms from my Discus diets. Better safe than sorry.

Hey Hasitha, I would steer clear of them IMO and others. They are not safe, read the following post. It's your risk

There should be no problem feeding freeze dried tubifex worms. Live would be another story. There's a big difference between freeze drying an organism and bacteria being dried and able to form spores.

Nitrifying bacteria are not capable of forming spores or being dried out.

As to heavy metals, that could apply to our own water sources, right down to the water used to form the pellets and flake food that we use.

Do we stop feeding beef heart or liver because it's loaded with antibiotic and steriods that were fed to the beef, chicken, turkeys etc.

I've been using freeze-dried tubifex for 14 months with no problems at all. The fish love them and it makes feeding easy. When you look at FBW analysis and see 80% water, and the tubifex are 52% protein, you realize its a much more cost effective form of feeding.

Everybody has there opinions and there is no scientific evidence in either direction, just assumptions. Everything has a risk and if your fish are doing fine and busting out at 7-9inches in size, hey...tubifex worms of any sort should be the staple diet for discus. Unfortunately that isn't the case. Anybody wanna post a nice picture of 9 inch discus feed dried tubifex worms. I'll be waiting a long time.

    Cheers

Eddie not one of these diets should be staple....be that anyone of the worms or frosen or freeze dried foods...it's like you or I eating steak every day or MacDonalds, it'll kill us. The amino acids, carbs, fats etc mix won't work we'll miss something.

Tubiflex is another treat food, something to add to an overall balanced diet...never seen a fish kill using it

Right Graham, it's the difference between growing out your healthy discus or just keeping them sufficed with food that can easily be substituted with a much superior feed. Why waste the feeding time with them, there are so many better foods for the discus diet.
