Check out the latest post by Hans. There's a you tube video of some breeding pairs and several have wire mesh. He'd be the man to ask about this and I'd be willing to bet he'll reply to your email.

Is anyone out there doing this and having any luck? I've seen people trying it but have seen little in the way of them having success...at lease reporting it anyway! I have a good breeding pair that eats their eggs after 2 days every time and wanted to try this. Will they then eat their fry once their 'free swimming?'
Plus, are you using a metal or plastic type of cage...chicken wire I presume. Wire would work I guess because it's more sturdy, but you would have to make sure there are NO wire stubs sticking out anywhere. Plastic, to me, would be weak and would not be very sturdy. But I don't know....
But, anyway, if anyone is doing this to their Breeders eggs, please let me know and what and how you're doing it.
Thanks a bunch.

Thanks Kirk. I bought my pairs from Hans and probably drive him nuts with all the e-mails I send him.... I appreciate the feedback.
I've had pairs that required a wire mesh around the eggs. Worked for most, not for others.

Hi Larry, and thanks. Wondering what you mean that 'it was required?'
Why did it work for most and not for others? Why did it not work for all?
Curious.....
I've seen them use the mess screen for covering gutters on a house. Just cut to size and angle then put it on cone. Plastic so you don't have sharp points on it.

wxman,
I have had chronic egg eaters over the years that raised the fry after they swam out from behind the screen. Some parents, and these were mostly young parents, would actually blow the wigglers that were behind the screen off the spawning substrate and eat them. Some just ate the fry after they became free swimming. Most, over time, became good parents. A few, however, did not.

I would screen the eggs and then pull the female. hey are the egg eaters most of the time.
