Talking Moved to China and Back In the Hobby!

    Hello Simply!

I have recently relocated from New Jersey to Dalian, China, due to some family matters. After being absent from the Discus community for almost 2 yrs, I finally settled down and am officially back in the discus hobby! For those of you on this forum, who still remember me being active back in 2005/2006, you have no idea how much I have missed keeping these amazing fish and talking about them all day long on Simply!

Now that I'm back, so be prepared to see a lot of postings and questions from me, and of course, pictures of my newly acquired babies, too!

    Sincerely,

    Lauren Tan

So you're in Dalian right now? That's a city in China that I'd like to visit someday. I'd also like to go up to Harbin sometime to see their ice festival.

Do you have access to many good quality discus there?

    Hi Walter,
Believe or not there are quite a few good discus breeders here in Dalian. I've seen some very nice bulldogs, reds, and checkerboard pigeons, to name a few. I heard that Discus is very popular in Harbin, too! This year's ice festival is also the biggest and most remarkable one in recent years.
Come visit China sometime! I'm sure you'll find a lot of fun here! I could help to arrange some tours to the discus hatcheries.

    Regards,
    Lauren

    Lauren,

I've already been to Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Xian, Lanzhou, Dunhuang, Urumqi, Turpan, Guangzhou, Guilin, Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, Shangri-la, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and Macau.

I'd like to see several other cities such as the ice festival in Harbin, the Shoushan stone carvings in Fuzhou, the War Memorial and old city wall in Nanjing, the Panda Park in Chengdu, the Zigong Dinosaur Museum, The Leshan Giant Buddha, Dalian, Hangzhou, Suzhou (to see the canals and gardens), Pingyao (to see the walled old city), Shaolin (to see the Shaolin Temple) and since Americans are usually not allowed into North Korea, I'd like to go up to the border from the China side to take a look. I think there are lots of things and places to see in China!

Wow! You've been to quite few places in China! As a Chinese I have to admit that even I haven't been to some of those places. What a shame! A lot of catch ups for me!

Hi Lauren: Welcome back! It's great to see someone returning to the hobby, and to hear that China, the home of my gradfathers, is in the thick of discus mania. I have met quite a few Chinese people who are very into discus, and who are amazingly knowledgeable. Though I am proudly American, I am happy whenever I see a Chinese flag tacked onto a name here on Simply! mike

    Hi Al,
I still remember meeting up with you in New York back in 2006. It was such a pleasure! How are the two breeding pairs doing? Do you still have them?
    Hope all is well!

It's fairly easy for me to get supplies and discus here in Dalian. There are many supply shops and fish stores around the city. Actually, I've visited at least 5 stores that specialize in Discus. I'm not sure about Shan Dong, though. May I ask which city your friends works out of?

OMG!!! Five specialist strore for Discus in Dalian alone??? And as I understand it, Dalian is a big city in world terms, but certainly not one of the biggest in China!! There are only a few cheezy and dirty dinky LFS here in Boston, and none specialize in Discus. In fact, none actually know all that much about discus, by the look of those scrawny little specimen they try to sell for $100 a piece with white stringy poop hanging off their vent to uneducated buyers....oh that just gets me so mad!!!

I am definitely retiring in China....
