Default Raised White Spot, how would you treat this.

    Long story short.

About 2 months ago I noticed a white spot on a fishes tail fin, parasite of some kind the size of a pin head. No wound or anything just one spot. No other fish had any. Everyone said don't worry about it.
It noticably grew begain to raise and aparently hatched.

A new spot on the same fish apeared about 1/4 from the last spot on the tail fin a few days later and a few much smaller spots 1/10 the size of the main spot have appeared all have been there about 3 wks,not changing and never seem to effect the fish. Now I notice another fish with the same type of larger spot on a dorsal fin, pin head size white and raised.
It almost looks like a smaller spawn egg that was not fertile turned white.

I'm sick of these things and hope someone can tell me how to treat to eliminate them.
    Thanks

    Hi Alfred

I remember that post and thinking, poor Alfred! No one can tell him what it is but it can't be "nothing"!
Let's try this by a process of elimination....

If you can get hold of a microscope, even a kids one, or a quick use of one from a High School Science Lab, your local vet, doctor, chemist even maybe..do a scrape and have a look, compare to the images in the Simply Library, then you will really know for sure. I'd also make the WC a little bigger like 50% a day to help get concentrations of nasties down. Have you ever put salt in your tank? If it was me, and unless someone has a better idea (no one did before)I would try the salt first, if no improve I would go with a protozoacide like Protozin.

PROTOZIN is used for the control of all protozoan and fungal infections e.g Whitespot, Fungus, Neon Tetra Disease, Velvet, Costiasis and Trichodiniasis.
Tell me if you have tried salt first...

I actually just treated the tank with epson salt for a over eater a couple of
    weeks ago.
I also just treated this tank with metro and upped the temp to 88 and then a dewormer for a new fish that after quarantine showed white feces and wasn't eating.
All fish are doing great except for these couple of pesky white parasites.

Hi Epsom Salt will have no affect in any way on a parasite of any kind. Metro is an antibiotic that affects very very few parasites...mainly hex. A de-wormer affect worms and nothing else.

Personally I would do nothing for a couple of cysts at this point but if you want to use something then salt at about 0.3% salinity...this will wreck plants. You could also use something like QuickCure.

    Roxanne & Graham,

I understand about doing nothing but this is going on almost 3 months and annoying.
Quick cure I have never used, yet.

I have a few questions about salting.

    1. Can I use Morton white crystal water softing salt / solar salt?

    2. .3% salinity? How do I measure that?
Is there a mix ratio to gal ( grams, tsp, or such )
    My hydrometer starts at 1.012 - 1.032

    3. do I keep temp at 86 degrees F?

    4. how long should I treat & how do I handle WC

Thanks for the help guys this is frustrating.

Don't kill them with kindness,,,pretty minor problem...again I wouldn't mess with things at this point

Quick cure I have never used, yet.

Clean up any organics, up the air and water chnages between doses

I have a few questions about salting.

    1. Can I use Morton white crystal water softing salt / solar salt?

That should be fine as long as it's 99.8% salt and no additives like YPS

    2. .3% salinity? How do I measure that?
Is there a mix ratio to gal ( grams, tsp, or such )
    My hydrometer starts at 1.012 - 1.032

Toss the hydrometer...it's for salt water. Buy a salinity test kit, it's made for these low levels.

0.3% is 3 teaspoons per gallon added over a 24 hour period. Wilds, cories, neons, cards, oto's probably will not like this level.

    3. do I keep temp at 86 degrees F?

    Yes

    4. how long should I treat & how do I handle WC

    maintain it for several weeks

Thanks for the help guys this is frustrating.

Sorry I just got out a magnifying glass as my old eyes are failing me.
I took a long look at each fish and see a few 10 or more of the exact same spots but much smaller, the size of a pin point again only on the fins of a couple of other fish.
Would you do anything yet and would it be salt treatment or quickcure?

    Thanks

That's another story...if you don't have any salt sensitive fish or plants you could try it....bring it up slowly over a couple of days...any signs of stress then do a water change.

    Some light reading 1st

I was out of town the last 2 days.

Ok I'm going to try the salt.
I'm having trouble finding a salinity test kit at my LFS.

Can you recommend a test kit brand that I can search for.
    Thanks

    Graham,

    Finally got the test kit.
Now I'm a little thick between the ears here so can you explain to me the proper way to use this salt test kit along with water changes.

Above post --- .3% = 3 tsp per gallon (added slowly over 24hr period)

According to the salinity test chart, 3 drops would be .03% or .3% same thing.......Correct???

If that is correct, then when I do a WC I should add Approximately 3 tsp for every gallon I change out and retest then adjust as needed to get to .3% again.

    How does that sound?

''...According to the salinity test chart, 3 drops would be .03% or .3% same thing.......Correct???...''

Nope...3 drops is 0.3%.....10 drops is 0.10%....30 drops is 0.3%

''....then when I do a WC I should add Approximately 3 tsp for every gallon I change out and retest then adjust as needed to get to .3% again....''

    Yup.....

Nope...3 drops is 0.3%.....10 drops is 0.10%....30 drops is 0.3%

    Huh?

30 drops = .3% so I have about 4 tests in this kit using 30 drops a test to get to .3%?
