    Default sump question..

    guys, is a sump with only bio-balls for a media be good enough for my discus? i am planning on rebuilding my sump with just bio-balls.. if it's not enough, what are the media should i put together with my bio balls?

    It could work but make sure that the water comming in is really clean (no debris, poo, hard matter etc..) as this will clog them quick which will reduce their efficiency.

    can you put a pre filter sponge or filter media pad over/on top the bio balls ?this will help catch some of the larger peices of crap before it gets to your bio balls. rinse the pre filter every other day .

    I just use a peice of old fashion polyester fiber as mechanical and change it out every couple of days...cheap and very simple

    yup, non fire retardant stuffing available at wal-mart or any other dept store

    Yp just make sure that it has no fire retardants and it polyester or something like it...not cotton batting

    Some silicones contain anitmicrobials. When in doubt, I try not to use non-aquarium products.
