Supposedly it's all an act and he's filming some sort of documentary. Of course, his publicist denies these rumors. I'm sure that's what the publicist has been instructed to do, of course.
It doesn't mean that he's not still nutty. He's acting like a coke-head in that segment.
Ryan
I thought people on coke talk a lot and are hyper-active, no? He's not slurring his words so no ludes or drinking. He's either on xanax or a like drug, or acting. Who cares which it is anyway, he's just another brick in the wall.
Mark
^ Some are. Supposedly after doing massive amounts of it, though, you get what you see in the video. Someone who's too exhausted to form words or even pay attention.
Even if it's an act, I think it's stupid. Maybe that's just me.
What's to be gained by the act? Do you know what the documentary is about?
Oh I agree Ryan, it is stupid either way. He's a good actor, too bad he a lousy role model, wheich is what I teach my kids about celebrities. They have a special talent, some of them, but are otherwise ordinary people.
Mark
That's my question, too. All I know is that the documentary is supposedly being filmed by Casey Affleck.
Andy Kaufman did something similar to this back in the 70s from what I read. Sacha Baron Cohen always creates characters for his movies and shows, as well (Borat, Ali G, etc.).
I'm not sure that I find Joaquin Phoenix's "act" to be very funny, though. It mostly just feels uncomfortable watching it. Maybe we'll just have to wait and see.
What a shame if it's for real and he is drugged out.
His work in the Cash movie was excellent.
If he wanted PR he sure got it.
Was on the road yesterday a lot and switching around radio stations this story was all over the place.

if this is not an act then i kind of feel bad for the guy. if he is going through something or on something then ridiculing him in my eyes is not really helping matters. just my 2 cents

You can shoot enough coke to make you real stupid. That was the first think I thought when I saw the clip. He needs a bit of smack to level him off.
Mat
Didn't the guy already give up acting? I mean, he did announce his 'early retirement'... although that could be a clever act in itself (or not so clever). I really don't know what to make of his current behavior, although that's what the intention seems to be...

Today I'm feeling:

It was all staged IMO. JP is to good an actor and to intelligent to just fall apart like this! Granted the death of his bro hit him hard but JP is just to into acting to give it up for any BS hip hop crap! It is not him at all...Painful watchin him try and rap to just fall off the stage. I dont think hip hop is in his future. Andy Kaufman would be proud!
On a side note, DL did a great job as well!
Mark
I agree that he IS indeed a good actor! Brilliant in fact.
But IMO he's too good an actor to stage some sort of Kaufman or Cohen type routine without doing a better job of it. Watch the video closely - the humor does not come from any comedic timing on the part of Phoenix, it's all Letterman making the best out of a bad situation. If Phoenix was really playing to Letterman - you'd see it in his reactions to Letterman. He's too good to do that role - for humorous effect - that poorly.
Nope. I suspect what you saw was the real thing. He's got a family history of serious drug abuse. Speedballing killed is older brother River. With that little bit of family history, doing a national TV imitation of someone with a serious drug problem would be in unbelievably bad taste.
Nope. I think that's the real thing. Unfortunately.
