I had a couple spotted spiny eels with some smaller discus around 1995 and had no issues. The eels were about 6 inches and the discus were only maybe 3 inches at the time. The eels were escape artists though and both ended up as fish jerky behind the tank before I even realized they were gone. They liked to burrow in the substrate so it didn't seem unusual to not see them for long periods of time

What I have noticed with Fire Eels.... if you do not have anything to fight with them for territory and they are larger they do not try to escape.
My 18" eels I have had for a year or so went almost 9 months with no lid....
I have a Peacock with my Discus in a 300 gal tank he dose great gets all the left overs .
I'm housing 2 6 inch eels in my 90 gal community tank, a Peacock and a Tire Track and they don't bother my discus at all. My Peacock Eel is very friendly and swims up to me from time to time and is never hiding in the substrate. The Tire Track Eel hides in the sand most of the time.
