Default How to dispose of dying discus..

I had a 1.5" discus that was dying.. he was at bottom of tank, not moving but was breathing..
    i poked him, didn't move
got out the net, didn't move..
    pulled in out, didn't move

i didn't want to flush him.. so i put him in garbage disposal..

now, it was a much bigger fish, i would probably use a knife and to it quick..

    what have you done?

you can use clove oil to euthanize, but that is really for culling. If he is in that bad of shape just bag and freeze. It does not sound like he has too much life left in him. Hard thing to do but it is best to get him out while still alive. Once a fish dies any parasites that fish is carrying leaves to find a live host. Bag and walk away.

    Good luck

I have heard that freezing is actually a very humane way of ending a fish. This is assumed because you will find the fish frozen in an upright position as if it were swimming without any signs of distress.

2 things I've done with fish
put in a plastic bag with tank water and into freezer.
Put in a bag and quickly slap it on floor.

1 thing I haven't done is put it alive through a grinder though.

Warlock, did I get you to wondering?

I've heard that, too, and I've frozen many fish. Not one ever remained upright - they always were flat on the bottom of the container . . .

The fastest way is get a bucket of cold water,,,put plenty of ice in it..swirl the water around for alittle bit to get the water fridged cold,,,put the unlucky discus in it (make sure he goes below the ice) and within seconds the deed is done..nothing faster in my opinion...

    Curious....

Why not just flush the fish down the toilet?

We flush much more disgusting stuff down there.
