They will form thier own school. Cardnels do better in higher temps if your going to keep Discus.
intermix and school together, or will they form their own separate schools within the tank? Any experiences would be very greatly appreciated.
Tank is a 240 gallon cubish shape; 4' by 4' by 2' tall, in which I'm hoping to emulate an Iwagumi style setting. I have 7 large black 'boulders' in the tank now and will plant the white sand substrate with lots of HC. I don't think I'll be adding any tall plants, but who knows down the road. I would like to keep the water column open so I can see the fish all the time.
I am planning on adding approximately 75 cardinals and 75 neon greens, or maybe just 150 neon green tetras only.
In several months when the tank is stable, I may add a nice pair, or perhaps a small shoal of 5 blue diamond discus.
Thanks for the help with the tetra question!

Thank you! Hmm, now I need to decide on getting one, or both, species?
Its' possible that I may forgo the discuss down the road if the school tetras are sufficient enough to keep the tank interesting.
They will form their own groups but as a long time fan of the Green neon and THE Neon I keep with Discus I can tell you that Green Neons do well as Cardinals at Discus Temps. It is Parcheirodon innesi, the common Neon Tetra, that does not do well if kept above 80*F.
I was keeping Green Neons in with my 10 Heckels for the past 2 years until I sold my Heckels a couple months ago. Still have my Green Neons now sharing a tank with a couple pairs of Apistogramma wilhelmi. Still keeping them at 84*F.
My fish room stays so warm and even hot in the summer so I can only keep fish that handle warm conditions.
That is why I raise fancy L-number plecos, Discus Apistogramma, Sturisoma and other fish that love warm water.
