Default Bringing Fish on the airplane

Because of the nature of my job. I get to visit many places where our sponsors are. I'm wondering if anybody has tried to bring live fish with them on their travels. I contact AA, Continental and Delta but haven't heard back from them yet. Just wondering and looking to save shipping costs....

Most airlines state on their websites whether you can bring live fish. If it is not stated on the site, it probably is not permitted. I only remember few actually saying you could but I think you have to actually call ahead to let them know.

Several years ago I put a 10" pleco in a small cooler (6 pack size) with some water. They let me carry him through the security scanner but did not have to get him xrayed. He rode from CA to NC under my seat on the plane! But that was before 9 11 so who knows now...

After 911, you can't even bring a bottle water through TSA so I doubt a bag of fish will get through.

You may be able to do it via checked baggage but even that will cost you at least $15 on most airlines.

AA said that it could only be as checkin. Continental has not responded and Delta said liquids under 8 oz are permitted.

I travel alot also, I am currently working in Ft Lauderdale. I typically fly Airtran and have asked several times. Airtran will let you bring it on board as a carryon, however the issue is that security will not let you bring more than 4 oz of water. The security agent told me I could bring fish, as long as it wasn't in water (he was trying to be smart of course). I would be too afraid to check them in as luggage. I have brought live plants, snells and freshwater clams through security though.

AA said as long as the boc is withing the weight limit of 15 lbs you are OK. I'd also be concern about how they will be toss around as checkin. I might try with "common fish" to see what happens on my next trip.

Why don't you go to the breeder/whole sale/what ever, hand pick your Discus and let them be shipped to you.

Why take the risk to let you be stopped at any point, leave without your Discus or miss your flight????

Shipping cost are not that crazy to take the risk (my 2 cents)

The last 4 years I've had 3 calls from people in that situation.............. HELP I'm on BWI and they won't let me trough (never Discus btw.) 2 times I could make it (1 x not), picked up the box + address and shipped them. The other guy I've no idea how the fish end up,

Very good point Hans and not to forget that you will have to coordinate getting the discus from the seller to the airport. At the end of the day, you are probably better off getting it ship airport to airport.
