Does anyone use a "drop checker"?

What about a pH monitor system in conjunction with their regulator/solenoid?

My pH is approx 8.5. I have a RO/DI unit. Would this be OK to use in a planted tank? Or is this like discus and get plants that like my pH range and use well water? Another possibility is to haul water from a town nearby. I think it is 2 dollars for 400 gallons. I don't know what the pH of that water is.

I need to check my kh and gh too.

Yes, I use one - I posted it here:

Do you really need one? I take a look a mine now and then, but I've had planted tanks for years without one, so they aren't necessary, but they are nice to have.

I'll leave it to some others to answer your questions about using a regulator with a solenoid and your water conditions (mine aren't like yours, so I can't give you advice on that).
