    Default what am I?

Heres something for you to try and figure out. I took a few macro photography pics today out in my yard. I then cropped the photos so you are seeing a natural pattern....First photo with flash... remainder of Photos were taken without flash at a high ISO.

What do you think these photos are of?

It's kind of late in the year for wasps, but is it a section of a wasp hive? One of the pictures looks like there is a bit of the paper "peeling" away from the rest. Other than that, what Barb said. LOL!

    Wow,
Chad I am impressed! right on the money. Looks like I will have to get creative here if I am going to stump you guys.
I have a bald face hornet nest in the yard that got torn into by a woodpecker..... This was a piece of it.

I found it on the ground below the nest and was really amazed by the pattern...The photos don't do it justice. From a biology point of view that paper is amazingly complex...each row and color represents a different wood source that was harvested, and turned to pulp and used to make paper.... Over the course of the summer I saw the hornets chewing away on my garden fence, wood shed and old pile of pine trees... theres probably 20-30 or more sources they used... yeah I know ..I am weird...but things like that blow me away...so simple a creature and so complex a structure..

So anyone else want to post some pics for guessing session?

Very good Chad! I knew I had seen such a thing before but couldn't place it. Now I remember, it is in my cousin's living room hanging next to the fireplace! Empty of course.

LOL! The son of a friend of mine found an "empty" hornet's nest a few years ago. He brought it home and hung it in his room. A few days later, hornets starting hatching out of the thing, and people running around the house with bees chasing them. Too funny!

    LOL, thats crazy Darrell...funny though.

Chad, you are pretty good! Dang, I was well stumped..thought it was something man made due to all the layers and particle almost looked like fiberglass or paper.

    Darrell,

That brings back memories... lol I did that too one winter. I did not know that the adults all died in the winter...but the eggs/pupae stay dormant until spring.... It took 2 weeks for the hornets to hatch....

Thanks Barb! The last picture gave it away for me. You can see a layer of the "paper" peeling away. That's the only way I knew I had a **** at guessing correctly.

Thanks Eddie, those nests are just like paper. Imagine heavy tissue paper all wrapped around in a ball with little rooms inside. Pretty impressive I must say! These little guys are quite the engineers.

DOUBLE YIKES! Have you ever come across the ones the nest in the ground? When I was about 12 I ran over a nest opening with the lawn mover. By the time I was able to reach the screened in porch at the back of the house, I had been stung 5 times. Thanks god I'm not allergic!

Glad you know to have the antihystamine as well as the epipen.
Daniel - If I had a swimming pool, it would probably end up as a fish tank.
