It's kind of late in the year for wasps, but is it a section of a wasp hive? One of the pictures looks like there is a bit of the paper "peeling" away from the rest. Other than that, what Barb said. LOL!

When i was a kid my dad had a outfitting business for hunters in the state of Mont.Our base camp was 26 miles into the Bob Marshall wilderness.My job was packing supplies and hunters into camp.My pack string consisted of 16 mules,and a bell mare that ran loose ahead of the string.One day all was going along as normal when that crazy old mare came came charging thru the string with a swarm of hornets all over her.Well,you can imagine what happened next.Mules started bucking and running,it was a real rodeo.I turned them loose cause my saddle horse was doing his best to buck me off allso.It was just luck,when they all ran for camp and not back.For the next 2 days we picked up supplies strung out over a 10 mile stretch of trail.I hate hornets. Yeah, I also mowed the grass and got stung a half dozen times...thankfully I'm not allergic to them though, nor to my Chilean Rose tarantula's venom. If you like wasps' nests, we have Potter Wasps here in Georgia USA that build the coolest nests- a little round pot made from clay mud with a very narrow neck and trumpet-like spout; the wasp mom stuffs it full of paralyzed, still-living caterpillars as food, then attaches an egg to a silk line that dangles in mid air above the poor creatures. The egg hatches and the grub drops down to begin its feast

Great photos- initially I also thought they were macros of tree bark.
