Default Under the microscope: indentify parasites, bacteria etc.

I thnk it would be helpfull to post videos and pictures from the microscope to help everyone identify bacteria, Parasites, worms, nematodes and any other creatures lurking on the slide . I have had a hard time finding this information on the internet and what there is is not that great. So I thought I would start this out with this post and video. I think we can all learn a lot from this. Perhaps once positively identified they could be placed in a sticky for quick refrence. What do you think?

That is a great idea and would be very useful to many. I too have often searched many hours to little or no avail. What you have there appears to be a gill fluke (Dactylogyrus).

Yes, I believe you are right, gill or skin fluke . It is too bad , but apparently you are the only one to think this is a good idea so far. Thanks for the reply Maybe you can post a picture of something and get this started ?I have more but don't want to be the only one participating

I think that's a good idea, but not enough people have microscopes to contribute.

BTW, there are several video clips of various parasites on youtube.com - here's a nice one:

I like the idea, even though I have nothing to contribute atm.

I don't think Rickscics' video shows a parasitic fluke, at all, but rather some predatory cousin to them. Compare the way that critter moves and operates with the ones in Wahter's links to see what I mean...

Rickscics' little critter is an active and nimble hunter, actively foraging for food, and doesn't have the same headgear as the others...

    I do love the idea.

But, I am one microscope short of being able to contribute.

Well people ,you all need to get a microscope >
There are a few videos on Dr. Fosters. In case anyone is interested.
We need a Microbiologist here! Thanks for the interest.

Jhhnn: thank you for the observation you may be correct. This the reason I thought this post woould be important. In order to correctly treat a problem one must first know what the problem is. I think most people just take a guess and hope it works when treating sick fish.

i think this is a great thread as well Rick, but the other members hit it on the head when they said that most do not have a scope available. for those that do it would be a great contribution. i have a couple pics of something under the microscope that i will put on this thread tomorrow. still at work ATM.......... (50 minutes to the new year).

Maybe a guide to which microscopes we should be buying and using would be helpful as well.

I would love to get a microscope to check for sickness. I know that Big Tuck has one that he swears by.
What power microscope does one need to check out all the little critters that lurk in our waters.
Also I think if a reference guide to check and see what parasite, bacteria etc one is dealing with would be a very valuable tool. Good post....and hopefully those that are more educated and with scopes will jump on bourd......

No need to re-create the wheel; Here are some other videos I found on youtube.com of some common fish parasites:

Thanks Walter,I don't think we are trying to re-create anything .The objective is put these into an easy to find format, educate and improve the knowledge base for everyone here without having to search all over the Internet and to get confirmation. We appreciate the additions you have located and posted.Youtube is the best place to find this information. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. I'm not sure if it is ok to post from the site without permission form the person. I don't think it is a problem . Does anyone know?

I don't think there are any issues posting links the way Wahter has done, at all. I'd think that most youtube contributors love having their stuff linked... It's considered "fair use", iirc.

The vid of the fluke is excellent, quite definitive, as is that of the chilodonella...

Copying and re-posting would be a different matter, particularly if proper attribution was not made...
