Default Interesting cross maybe ... ??

This is a cross I am interested in seeing how it turns out. I know very little about genetics so should be a bit of fun and a learning curve. I took a punt on them being male and female and put them together. This is there second attempt

Female is the Valentine, male is the albino.

The first pic shows the fry being transferred from the female to the male. Pics 2,3 and 4 show the parents with fry on their sides. Is there a better sight? Pic 5 is another possible that I'm taking a punt with

    Hope you enjoy

    Well done Paul,
My guess is that you will get valentines. Either way you win. Nice spawn.

Thanks David, not sure I have the time to do a timeline justice

That would be my guess too, but that would be all it is. I really need to improve my knowledge of genetics - where's Rod when you need him

What I am pleased with is the fry are on the albino. I took these about ten minutes ago before closing the fish room.

Awesome shots and gorgeous fish Paul! That Albino male is super nice and the pictures with fry on his back are priceless! I'd love to see some updates as the babies grow out. Maybe not a timeline but definitely some shots of the juvies down the road. They possible pair should throw some stunners too.

    All the best,

Well Paul, the question is, what albino is that male? I'm sure that Rod will get it right with that info.

BTW, I'd be all giggly if pair #2 was in my tanks!

Thanks Eddie, if I manage to raise them I will post more pics

The albino was bought as a golden... he is one feisty fish though

Pair #2 are both nice fish, again I'm hopeful.

Weak gene golden x with a dominant red/white, interesting indeed. I see some barless discus in your future, all I can guess.

That is the question mate. I have several strains of golden albino and they all look similar to each other. Very difficult to tell what lays hidden under some albino strains. The male could truly be golden based, but also brown based or pigeon based and we couldn't tell for sure.

    Hi Paul,

They are a very beautiful pair first off, congratulations on a great looking spawn.

As for what they will produce is going to be difficult to answer. You will get lots of red/white type fry as the valentine is a type of red/white and controlled by the dominant white gene, but are heterozygous. (differing alleles on the locus of the chromosone) This should mean 50% or so red/white types among the fry.

If the golden albino is a pigeon based albino, then the remaining fry should be either pigeon bloods or pigeon bloods and brown based. (depending on how the pigeon gene is being carried)

If the golden albino is brown based, you will get many brown type fry along with the red/white types.

If the golden albino is truly golden based, then you will get the same results as the brown based scenario above. (the golden gene is recessive and when crossing recessives the gene disappears in the next generation.)

Now the tricky bit is what is the valentine produced from. I have no first hand experience breeding with them. It is possible they could have pigeon, golden or brown based ancestory and again it is difficult to tell just by looking at them. I suspect they have golden gene incorperated in the design of them as they are so clean (but i could be way off here). If they have the golden gene in them and your albino is a true golden then you will get many goldens along with the red/white types. Other possibilities exist as well. If this pair pulls this spawn off i will be very very interested to see a number breakdown of the different types produced. You should be able to discern them in a month or so.

The albino gene will be carried in all the fry.

I suspect with this crossing the complete gene makeup will be revealed only in the next generation produced from these fry.....

Hope that makes sense mate, and please ask if you need any clarification

Paul - nice venture to think of pairing a pair like this. I like the thought process more than anything.

    Great info Master Rod.

So in technical terms - regardless what the fry you get red/white, brown based, or pigeon - Will they ALL be categoried as Albino Intermidiates - my defintion of the term is (making sure I am not dilluting the phrase) each fry will carry a recessive Albino Gene.

Thanks Ashay, the only bit I was confident in was they would all carry the albino gene and yes it would be fair to say they are intermediates.

I will be keeping some and breeding them on in due course, providing I can raise them.
