Default Mesh for eggs - brands

    Hi,

I've been looking for mesh at Lowes and Home Depot but can't seem to find anything but Patching Fabric - does anyone have a brand name of what they have used? Don't want to put the wrong thing!

    Thanks!

    Andree

+3, the plastic gutter guard. I particularly like it because when I push it down on the cone it will stretch to a tight fit on the bottom of the cone. It isn't long enough to cover the entire cone so I make mine with several different diameters. This way if the eggs are layed near the top of the cone I can use a smaller diameter and it covers the top of the cone. If the eggs are layed near the bottom of the cone I use a bigger diameter.

Hmm, thanks! Everytime I go to Lowes or Home Depot and ask for plastic gutter guard they look at me like I'm crazy, especially when I tell them what it's for! That's why I thought a brand name might help.

They didn't used to eat the eggs, but they have been lately. I guess it's a sign they might not be fertile, but I thought I'd see for myself...

Kenny gave you the link but here it is again. Looks like the same stuff I got at home depot.

Thanks - I checked online for my local store with this link but they don't carry it - maybe I'll have to mail order it. Folks at the store just look at me like I'm crazy when I ask for it, so that doesn't help either.

I don't know why the discus started eating the eggs, but they seem to lay every Thursday and eat them every Saturday. Maybe they aren't fertile but I'd like to find out...

Go to Home Depot or Lowe's and ask for chicken wire. I like these better than the plastic mesh I buy from Michael's. Galvanized or ungalvanized does not matter. I've used mine for > 10 years with no problems. The wire type will hold onto a cone while the mesh type will occasionally float away.

    Have fun, Willie

Agreed. The metal wire can be formed to fit any type of cone with a tight fit. You can also see the eggs better. The gutter gaurd is often too short to cover all the eggs IME and keeps the fish too far back away from the eggs.

Ditto, mine are not plastic coated. Some are 10+ years old - no rust.
