    Default Eartheater Substrate

Whats the best substrate for eartheaters? Thinking about getting some so I want to be ready. I know they like fine sand so is regular play sand ok or would another choice be better?

I use 3m sand with mine and they are moving and spitting it out all day long. Haven't seen any adverse effects yet after a year or so

Is that just regular play sand? I have seen some videos on youtube and such and it some have that nice fluffy sand. To me it seems like play sand becomes to packed for them to do that???

I have some white sand by Carribsea...bought at PETSMART. Much lighter than play sand. Powdery like sugar. My Altifrons sift thru it all day...Bill

Isnt that stuff geared more towards african cichlids??? I need to keep the ph and softness down for my altums.

I'm pretty sure it's a neutral sand. I have used it in low ph/TDS water with wild Discus and never a problem or concern...Bill

I'm not sure. It's been several years since I got it. But I do remember making sure it was not African sand...Bill

Thank you....I might go with sand though cause I need to fill a 300 gallon tank with the stuff....crazy paying more for the sand then the fish.

Yea, it was expensive. But with Discus, I am very careful(anal) about what comes in contact with them or their environment. I'd rather pay a bit more for something that is known to be "safe" and meant for aquarium use. But lots use pool sand on here with no problems...Bill

I agree that when it comes to discus the added expense is worth it. If I was planning on adding discus to the tank I would follow your path but this tank will be for eartheaters, maybe some altums at a later date.
